CUBA 15
Cuba 15 tells the story of Violet Paz, a Cuban-Polish American teenager living in Chicago, USA. Having just turned 15, Violet feels 100% American and awkward about her cultural heritage, especially the Cuban side from her father. Conflict arises when her conservative grandparents arrive from Miami, insisting on throwing her a traditional quinceañera (a traditional Latin coming-of-age ritual). Violet reluctantly agrees. Throughout the quinceañera preparations, she is forced to engage more deeply with her family’s traditions, such as raucous domino games and Latin music. Through this process, Violet begins to ask questions about Cuban history and her father's past a past filled with anger and sadness over the country he fled. She must navigate the conflicting views within her family between old traditions, the pain of the emigrant experience, and modern perspectives to figure out who she is among all her inherited cultures, while also dealing with school pressures and relationships.
