Seesaw Girl

Linda Sue Park - Personal Name; Mou-Sien Tseng - Personal Name; Jean - Personal Name;

Seesaw Girl is set in 17th-century Korea during the Joseon Dynasty, a time governed by strict Confucian rules dictating social behavior, particularly for women of the noble class. The protagonist, Jade, is a young girl living a completely sheltered existence within the high, protective walls of her family compound, forbidden from being seen by any man outside her immediate family. Jade is fiercely intelligent and desperately curious about the world beyond the walls. Her only taste of freedom and the outside world comes from playing nolttwigi (the seesaw game), which allows her to soar high enough to glimpse the distant mountains and the lives of others. The story follows Jade’s quiet but determined search for knowledge and self-determination as she attempts to challenge the rigid boundaries of her society without bringing dishonor upon her powerful family.
