The Twits
The Twits is a work of dark comedy fiction about the most repulsive couple imaginable: Mr. and Mrs. Twit. They are vile characters, both physically (Mr. Twit never washes his beard, which is full of old food scraps, and Mrs. Twit is incredibly ugly and hides a glass eye) and morally.
The plot revolves around an escalating series of cruel practical jokes and marital battles, where they constantly torment each other in increasingly nasty ways (e.g., Mrs. Twit puts worms in her husband's spaghetti, and Mr. Twit ties Mrs. Twit to balloons). Furthermore, they inflict cruelty upon others, capturing and abusing their pet monkeys, the Muggle-Wump family, and forcing them to perform inverted circus tricks.
The climax occurs when the Muggle-Wump monkeys, aided by the Roly-Poly bird, decide to retaliate. They glue all the Twits' furniture to the ceiling. When Mr. and Mrs. Twit attempt to stand on their heads (as the monkeys were forced to do), the Muggle-Wumps trick the couple into getting glued upside down to the floor. They ultimately meet a fittingly terrible (in a comedic sense) fate—shrinking into themselves—as punishment for their wickedness. The underlying moral message is that evil thoughts breed physical ugliness, and that justice is served through intelligence and cooperation.
