Fever 1793

Laurie Halse Anderson - Personal Name;

This is a historical young adult novel set in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during the summer and autumn of 1793, when the city was ravaged by a deadly Yellow Fever epidemic. The story follows Matilda "Mattie" Cook, a resilient 14-year-old girl who lives above her family’s coffeehouse. Mattie's world is shattered when the plague strikes, claiming thousands of lives. After their servant dies, Mattie and her grandfather attempt to flee the city but are separated from her mother and must struggle fiercely to survive. Mattie has to face the disease herself, care for her ailing grandfather (who eventually dies), and return to a ruined Philadelphia to search for her mother. Throughout this ordeal, Mattie is forced to learn independence and compassion, particularly while working alongside Eliza, a free Black woman who works tirelessly to care for the sick.
