A Single Shard
A Single Shard is set in 12th-century Korea during the Goryeo Dynasty, a time renowned for its exquisite celadon pottery. The story follows Tree-ear, a young orphan boy who lives under a bridge with his aging friend, Crane-man. Fascinated by the beautiful pottery made by the local master potter, Min, Tree-ear accidentally causes damage to one of Min’s delicate pieces. To repay his debt, Tree-ear volunteers to become Min's unpaid assistant, enduring harshness and hoping to eventually learn the demanding art of pottery. Driven by unyielding loyalty and perseverance, Tree-ear embarks on a long, perilous journey to the capital city to present Min’s finest work to the King’s court. Along the way, he faces robbers and incredible hardship, losing all the finished work except for a single shard of Min’s flawless celadon—a shard that represents his own moral integrity and the master’s artistic genius.
