Blubber
Blubber is an unflinching look at the brutal dynamics of group bullying among fifth-grade girls. The story centers on Linda Fischer, who is cruelly nicknamed "Blubber" after giving a class report on whales. The harassment quickly escalates from minor teasing to severe, orchestrated persecution led by the popular and manipulative Wendy. The cruelty includes public humiliation, demanding that Linda perform humiliating acts, and complete social exclusion.
The narrative is told from the perspective of Jill Brenner, an initially complicit bystander who participates in the bullying to maintain her place in the clique. The turning point occurs when Jill herself unexpectedly becomes the new target of the group's malice. The novel explores the difficult ethical choices involved in bystander apathy versus standing up for what is right, demonstrating how quickly social power can shift and exposing the profound pain inflicted by emotional cruelty.
