The Prince And The Pauper
This simplified retelling of Mark Twain's novel is set in 16th-century London. The story centers on Edward Tudor, the young Prince of Wales, and Tom Canty, a poor, identically-looking boy from the wretched slums. Following a chance encounter, the two boys impulsively exchange clothes and identities.
The novel then tracks their vastly different and often terrifying adventures. The Prince, disguised as a pauper, is cast out of the palace and subjected to the brutal poverty and cruel injustices of the Tudor legal system. Meanwhile, Tom, mistaken for the Prince, struggles to survive the rigid, baffling customs of the royal court. Edward’s experience among the common people instills in him a deep sense of empathy and justice, lessons that profoundly influence his rule when he is eventually recognized and restored to the throne.
