Fathers
The novel is centered around Frannie, a girl living in a diverse urban neighborhood, who finds solace in the quote, "Hope is the thing with feathers". Frannie is deeply connected to her older brother, Sean, who is deaf, which helps her perceive and understand the world differently.
The narrative pivots when a new boy named Jesus arrives in Frannie’s class. Jesus’ arrival, being different and often quiet, sparks profound discussions among the students about names, identity, and what it means to be "other." Jesus also carries a message of optimism and hope, echoing Frannie's recurring theme of the feather.
Simultaneously, Frannie grapples with the presence and absence of father figures in her life (which explains why the book might have been misidentified as Fathers in your data). She attempts to understand her biological father and the role of men in her environment. The novel uses a rich, poetic, and lyrical narrative style, allowing the reader to feel the emotions and challenges faced by children in a multicultural setting. It focuses on the importance of communication, acceptance, and the definition of hope found within human relationships.
