A Corner Of The Universe

Ann M. Martin - Personal Name;

The story, set in the tranquil small town of Millerton in the 1960s, follows Hattie Owen, an eleven-year-old girl facing a sudden disruption to her predictable life. Hattie discovers her Uncle Adam, a kind but deeply troubled 21-year-old man who has been kept hidden in an institution due to his mental illness (implied to be on the schizophrenia/autism spectrum).

While Hattie's family struggles with the shame and fear associated with Adam's unpredictable behavior, Hattie instinctively bonds with him. Through her relationship with Adam and a new friend from the visiting carnival, Hattie begins to understand the destructive power of social prejudice and the complexities of being different. The summer ends tragically with Adam’s implied death by suicide, forcing Hattie to confront her grief, realize the value of empathy, and recognize the impact one unique person can have on another's "corner of the universe."
