Text
Tallahassee Higgins
The novel centers on Tallahassee "Tally" Higgins, a twelve-year-old girl who has spent her life living a carefree, chaotic, and rootless existence with her single, free-spirited mother, Liz. When Liz decides to move to Hollywood to pursue an acting career, she abandons Tally with her estranged, highly conventional Aunt Thelma and Uncle Dan in suburban Maryland.
Tally hates the new "house rules" and rebels, convinced her mother will soon send for her. She struggles with failing sixth grade and copes by lying to her classmates about her mother's supposed stardom. As Tally struggles to reconcile her love for her unreliable mother with the harsh realities of Liz's irresponsibility (including the revelation of her father's true identity), she must confront the fact that she may have been truly abandoned. The book tracks Tally’s slow, painful, yet ultimately rewarding journey as she learns to confront reality, accept the imperfect love of her new family, and finally find a sense of belonging.
